Baklahorani: It’s Carnival Time

Food moves us to behave in strange ways, but for the Greeks of Istanbul, a celebration of the broad bean, or bakla, is a means to dress up in costume and run wild in the streets. An old Istanbul tradition, recently revived by Greek expats, Baklahorani hits the streets of the Kurtulus neighborhood on Thursday February 11, 2010. The street parade begins and ends at a local cultural center for meze, drinks, live music, dancing and surely, some beans. According to organizers, this event is open to all – but masquerading is an absolute must. (A link to an article about last year’s festival can be found here.)

Program:
19:00: Meet at ERTHO – Ferikoy Educational and Cultural Association to prepare (Address: Lalaşahin Sok no 40)

19:30: Leaving ERTHO and walk with live musicians around the streets of Kurtulus

20:30: Return to ERTHO for further festivities.

Entrance Fee: 25 TL, traditional meze and 1 drink included.
