I'm staying a 10 minute walk from Mandabatmaz so this is where I'll be taking my morning cup. Had an interesting conversation with a bilingual Turkish girl there this morning as we huddled up against a wall at the lone table.
Used to be there were a dozen or so tiny tables in the alley where everybody read the paper, smoked and chatted with each other.
Nowadays it's mite different.
I asked about the lack of a communal space outside and the girl's face went red. As she explained it an "impotent old man" who's in power had a hard time getting his motorcade through a Beyoglu alley recently and decreed that all tables and chairs that formed al fresco dining areas be moved inside.
Thus the vibe of Mandabatmaz is terribly altered.
Most patrons now just get there coffee "to go" and take it somewhere else.
Ridiculous.
One of the great pleasures of this shop is the hang. The community of coffee lovers all basking in the narrow strip of real estate outside the shop.
Coffee is still incredible but the vibe is altered.
Due to one "impotent old man"

Istanbul is one of the most exciting cities in the world because of its culture, atmosphere, people, food, landscapes... last week I was there for the 4th time in the last few years and still felt the same attraction as the first time.
And Mandabatmaz, this small coffee shop is the place I always come back to. I may not go to Aya Sofia each time, but coming to Mandabatmaz is a must for me. Really there is no other place in the world for drinking such coffee!

GREAT coffee. And an easy, quiet break from the bustle of Istaklal Caddessi. Thanks!
